Brewers at the Break
Okay, okay, there's still a games to go before the All-Star Break, but I think some conclusions can be drawn about the team nonetheless. tc wanted to bet me that the Brewers wouldn't make the playoffs, and I declined, mostly because only four teams from each league get to go. But they have a legitimate shot of making the playoffs. Not a great shot, but a legitimate shot.
The Good:
The Good:
- Carlos Lee is one of the top 5 sluggers in the National League and Geoff Jenkins is currently on one of his tears. Jenkins is one of the streakest hitters in baseball, and he is currently in the midst of a hot streak-- after being mired in a slump for about a month in late May and most of June.
- Rickie Weeks is starting to play much better defensively at 2nd base, and his offensive production is excellent for a 2nd baseman.
- Ben Sheets, Toma Okha and J.J. Hardy should be back from injuries soon after the Break. That's adding a #2 and #3 starter to your rotation, plus a good short stop, without having to trade anybody. Nice.
- The Brewers have the best home record in the National League.
- With the return of Sheets, Okha and Hardy, the Brewers will have good depth at nearly every position, including starting pitcher.
The Bad:
- The Brewers are a dismal 15-26 on the road, and they play more road games than home games after the break. If they finish 30-51 on the road they won't make the playoffs. Nor should they.
- Closer Derrick Turnbow has been melting down with alarming regularity of late after being brilliant through April and May. An area of strength is now an area of concern, as the Brewers are definitely not good enough to blow games late.
- Their defense, though improving, is still below average and they aren't good enough to be giving other teams a lot of extra outs with errors.
So, we'll see. I don't think they will make a run for the playoffs, but I think they have the talent to stay in the chase. And if things click right... well, who knows. Mainly, they have to figure out how to win on the road. If they can play .500 on the road from here on in, they'll be in the mix at the end of the season.
