Mr. Smith Goes to Washington?
Probably not-- but this guy, I could vote for with a clear conscience and actually be pleased if he won-- not simply hopefully that the schmuck who won was better than the schmuck who lost. I don't agree with all of Michael Smith's positions-- but I agree with most of them, and I find the concept of a "zealous moderate" to be very pleasing to consider indeed.
The big issues as I see them:
The big issues as I see them:
- The War on Terror and Iraq. His approach of instituting a sort of national military service program (he calls it a Draft, but I'm not sure it is exactly) makes me a little leery, but I'm willing to learn more. I definitely like this: "If we are at a 'state of war' against terrorism, then we should act as such."
- Government Bloat, the Deficit and the Debt. I like his approach to the Federal Gov't, though, again, I'm not sure they're practical-- but maybe it is time for a complete overhaul, since tweaking things doesn't seem to accomplish anything.
- Government Intrusion into the lives of individuals. Smith is DOBA (Dead On Balls Accurate) on this one. Big Brother does not need to regulate us at the federal level-- one of the great strengths of our nation has always been the Federalist approach to government. That approach has been greatly weakened during the last century-- a return to a more federalist approach would be most excellent.
